For a wireless client computer to connect to a remote access server a couple of components are required
Wireless Network Interface Card (NIC) on the client computer- The wireless NIC translate the workstation digital signal into radio signals that are sent to a transreceiver located in the same area as the wireless clients computer
Access Point (AP)- The access point is the transreceiver that receives the signals from the wireless client computer.The AP or Access Point is connected to the Local Area Network (LAN) segment which subsequently send the data it receives from the wireless clients to the remote access server.
Design Consideration-In designing your wireless network you must determine where to locate the wireless access point based on the location of your wireless users.APs are located throughout the coverage areas desired but keep in mind that any devices such as microwave owens,cordless phones,wireless video camera and certain medical equipment can interface with your wireless network. You can also expect interference from metal objects such as elevator,heating/air conditioning ducts and wired steel mesh to support dry wall or steel girders to support structure.
Number of AP needed-Wireless networking design should also include fault tolerence and redundancy.The average coverage of one AP is about 150 feet radius.If there are too many users accessing an AP the effective data transmission rate will be lower and the available bandwidth for users will be reduced.
Securing Wireless Access- There are some inherent dangers using wireless technologies.An unauthorised users who is in close proximity to an AP can intecept data.An unauthorised user with a compatible wireless adapter can gain access to a wireless network.To counter these types of attacks you can configure the wireless AP as a remote authentication dial in user service popularly known as RADIUS.
